Cushion cut engagement rings: the complete guide

The short answer: Cushion cut engagement rings pair a softly squared outline and rounded corners with a bright, brilliant-style sparkle. Choose a square cushion (a length-to-width ratio of about 1.00–1.05) for a classic, pillowy look, or an elongated cushion (about 1.15–1.25) for a slimmer line on the finger. A halo adds presence, a hidden halo adds side sparkle, and a solitaire lets the stone speak for itself.

What makes a cushion cut different

A cushion diamond sits between a square and a circle. Its sides curve gently and its corners are rounded, so it reads soft and romantic rather than sharp. That outline recalls antique diamonds, which is why it suits vintage-inspired settings so naturally.

Underneath, most modern cushions are cut with brilliant-style facets. They return light in many small flashes, much like a round. The difference is the frame: you get sparkle inside a shape that feels a little more personal than a round solitaire.

The rounded corners also help day to day. There are no sharp points to protect, so a well-made four-prong or claw setting holds a cushion securely. You can browse every shape side by side in our diamond shapes guide.

Square vs elongated cushion: the ratio decides the look

Two cushions of the same carat weight can look like different stones. The length-to-width ratio is the reason. Divide the length by the width (both listed in millimeters on the grading report) and you know which family you are looking at.

Cushion style Popular ratio How it looks Who it suits
Square cushion 1.00–1.05 Balanced, soft, classic Halo designs and vintage settings
Elongated cushion 1.15–1.25 Longer outline, slimmer on the finger Solitaires, hidden halos and three-stone rings

These ranges are popular, not rules. A slightly elongated cushion just above 1.05 can look lovely if you want something in between. What matters is that you choose the shape on purpose rather than discovering it when the ring arrives.

How a cushion cut sparkles

Cushions do not all sparkle the same way. Some show broad, chunky flashes that feel antique. Others show a finer, busier sparkle that people often call "crushed ice." Neither is better. It comes down to the look you love.

Photos flatten this difference, so look at any cushion in motion before you decide. Watch for even brightness across the stone as it tilts. Every Raul center diamond is Excellent or Ideal cut, E–F color and VVS1–VVS2 clarity, with an independent IGI grading report included, so the cut and clarity are documented rather than promised.

Cushion vs round vs oval

If you are deciding between shapes, this is how a cushion compares with the two most requested alternatives.

Cushion Round Oval
Outline Softened square or rectangle Circle Elongated ellipse
Sparkle Brilliant-style, chunky or "crushed ice" Many small, even flashes Brilliant-style; can show a bow-tie
Feel Romantic, vintage-leaning Timeless, classic Modern, lengthening
Popular ratio 1.00–1.05 or 1.15–1.25 Round by definition 1.30–1.50
Best size check Length and width in mm Diameter (about 6.4 mm at 1.00 ct) Length and width in mm

Face-up size depends on how each stone is proportioned, so compare millimeters on the report, not carat weight alone. If you love an oval's length but want softer corners, an elongated cushion is often the bridge. Compare the round and oval collections side by side.

The best settings for cushion cut engagement rings

Halo

A halo of small diamonds frames the center and makes it read larger from above. The cushion and the halo were made for each other: the soft outline carries a frame without looking busy. Our Cushion Cut Lab-Grown Diamond Halo Engagement Ring is a clean example. See more in halo engagement rings.

Hidden halo

A hidden halo sits under the center stone. From above you see a clean cushion; from the side you catch a ring of extra sparkle. It suits elongated cushions especially well, as in the 4 Carat Elongated Cushion Cut Lab Grown Diamond Hidden Halo Engagement Ring. Browse hidden halo rings.

Solitaire

A single cushion on a plain band is the most honest way to wear it. Nothing competes with the stone, and any wedding band sits beside it easily. Start with solitaire engagement rings.

Vintage

Milgrain edges, filigree and twisting vines lean into the cushion's antique character. These designs feel like heirlooms from day one. Explore vintage engagement rings.

The Raul tip Ask for the length and width on the IGI report and divide one by the other before you choose a setting. That single number tells you whether the cushion reads square or elongated, and which setting will flatter it.

What cushion cut engagement rings cost with us

In our current collection at the time of writing (October 2026), cushion cut engagement rings start from $750 for a 1 carat cushion solitaire in 14K gold. Halo, hidden halo and three-stone designs sit higher because they carry more diamonds and more metal.

Across our full engagement ring collection (all shapes), the median 14K variant price at the time of writing is $1,253 for a 1.0 ct center, $1,556 for 2.0 ct and $1,896 for 3.0 ct. 18K versions cost more because 18K is 75% gold, compared with 58.3% in 14K. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than mined diamonds of the same grade, which is where the room for a larger cushion often comes from.

Every ring is made to order and crafted in 2–3 weeks, with free insured shipping in the US. If you have a proposal date, order at least 4 weeks ahead.

Questions

Is a cushion cut good for everyday wear?

Yes. A diamond is very hard, and the cushion's rounded corners have no sharp points to protect. Choose a secure prong or claw setting, and have the prongs checked from time to time like any ring you wear daily.

Should I choose a square or an elongated cushion?

Choose square (around 1.00–1.05) for a soft, classic look that pairs beautifully with a halo. Choose elongated (around 1.15–1.25) if you want the stone to lengthen the finger. Both are popular; the right one is the one you picture on her hand.

Does a cushion look smaller than a round of the same carat?

It depends on proportions, so compare the length and width in millimeters on each IGI report. A round of about 1.00 ct measures roughly 6.4 mm across, which gives you a useful reference point.

Which metal suits a cushion cut?

All of them. We craft in 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold. White gold is rhodium plated and benefits from re-plating every year or two depending on wear. Rose gold gets its warmth from copper. Our metal guide covers the details.

What if the ring does not fit?

Every ring includes one free resize within 60 days of delivery, with shipping both ways. Most rings resize by one or two sizes. Read more on our resizing page.
